Clonad-Trumera 4-7 Mountmellick 2-8

Laois U-15 ‘C’ Hurling Championship Final

Clonad-Trumera claimed U-15 ‘C’ glory in the LOETB Centre of Excellence this morning with a battling win over an impressive Mountmellick side.

Warren O’Shea was introduced to the action in the 25th minute for the victors and it proved to be an inspired change as he netted twice before half time and carried his form into the second half to complete his hat-trick with a crucial goal.

Mountmellick started out the game very strongly with Charlie McEvoy leading the way from midfield and Mick Conoy proving dangerous inside, but Clonad-Trumera dug in and with the brilliance of Aedan Conroy and James O’Shea in the engine room their forwards flourished as the game wore on.

It was the aforementioned McEvoy and Conroy that combined for the opening five points of the game as Mountmellick raced into a commanding lead within just 10 minutes in the calm conditions in Portlaoise.

Clonad-Trumera put a fair dent in the gap when Bobby Callaghan was quickest to react to a long ball in by Andrew Delaney to find the net, but as they say you’re most vulnerable after scoring and that rang true when Riley Deegan scored an almost identical goal at the other end mere seconds later.

A brace of points from frees by Aedan Conroy settled Clonad-Trumera before O’Shea got the first of his trio with his first touch of the ball less than a minute after coming on.

Once again Clonad-Trumera left themselves open to a rebuttal and this time it was Charlie McEvoy that made a blazing run inside and forced a great save from Conor Kerry before proving successful off the rebound.

O’Shea again came to the fore for Clonad-Trumera when he latched onto a beautifully cut sideline into the danger area and he turned to lash it home to bring the sides level at the break – 2-5 to 3-2.

Daniel Tynan and Mick Conroy traded points from play early in the second half but Clonad-Trumera were starting to get on top and dominate possession, resulting in three outstanding frees from Conroy and a fantastic point from Bobby Callaghan to go four ahead midway through the half.

Scores were hard to come by as the legs began to tire but Charlie McEvoy found a brilliant point from range, however Mountmellick again were undone by O’Shea when he rattled the net for a third time after a pass inside by James O’Brien.

Jack Blanc secured a consolation point for Mountmellick late on, but the damage was done and Clonad-Trumera ran out victorious.

Man of the Match – Warren O’Shea (Clonad-Trumera)
There was a plethora of excellent performers on both sides with Charlie Mac being outstanding for Mountmellick while Aedan Conroy was faultless for Clonad-Trumera, but goals win games and Warren O’Shea provided the goals.

He was a constant threat after his introduction and he had three chances at goal and he took all three of them expertly, ultimately putting his side into the winning position
